City & Charming Dragør |

More infoHide |
This tour will cover the same itinerary as Copenhagen Panorama 401002, but will combine with a visit to charming Dragør. After completing your panorama of Copenhagen you drive to the island of Amager. At the very tip of the Island is the beautiful little village of Dragør. In the early 16th century, King Christian II invited a group of farmers from the Netherlands - at the time, a more agriculturally advanced nation than Denmark - to settle here to produce food for the royal household. Twenty-four families arrived, and they and their descendants stayed for three centuries, continuing to live in Dragør and leaving only for their weekly trips to the Amagertorv market in Copenhagen.
Today Dragør is one of the few villages in Denmark that has managed to keep its charming old centre intact as it has been traffic free since 1978. The majority of the houses date from the end of the 18th century and are characterised by a simple building style as well as red roofs, cobblestone streets and a charming harbour front.
You will have the option of exploring Dragør at your leisure or joining your guide on a narrated walk through the picturesque, narrow, cobble-stoned streets before meeting at a local hotel, where coffee and a Danish pastry will be served. Afterwards a scenic drive alongside the Øresund, with splendid views of the spectacular road bridge linking Denmark to Sweden, will return you to the pier.
By coach/on foot. Min 40/Max 160.
Please note: The guided walk of Dragør is approximately 25-minutes duration over mainly cobblestoned terrain and is optional. Total amount of time spent in Dragør is approximately 1 hour 20-minutes, including the stop for refreshments. Flat, comfortable footwear is recommended. The order of sightseeing may alter depending on traffic conditions and the ship’s berthing arrangements.

Tivoli Gardens was founded in 1843 by Georg Carstensen and was inspired by the so called romantic pleasure gardens of Europe. Your guide will take you on a walk through the Park, regaling stories about its history and famous visitors. Then, enjoy a famous Tivoli Cream Cake accompanied with tea or coffee served in beautiful surroundings in the Park.

Berlin Highlights & River Cruise |

Berlin is a city that stands as a symbol of radically changing history. Reminders of the past such as the Berlin Wall and monuments of the future sit together to provide the perfect setting for the 21st century. Witness the unique mixture of ‘past meeting present’ in this city of contrasts that during the last century often found itself at the crux of world events.
Your full day tour starts with a drive through Rostock’s suburb where you join the autobahn for the three-hour journey to Berlin where you will meet your experienced local guide.
The first part of your day includes a stop at Charlottenburg Palace, built as a summer residence for the Prussian kings, and considered the most impressive of all the palaces restored after World War II. Continue towards Berlin’s centre where you will get to see one of Berlin’s most poignant symbols: The Brandenburg Gate, formerly on the eastern side of the Wall and from 1961 to 1989 inaccessible to pedestrians and vehicles. Among other highlights you will pass in the former West Berlin is the ruined Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church which marks the eastern end of the Kurfürstendamm, the city’s elegant shopping thoroughfare. The Church, built at the end of the 19th century, was partly destroyed in 1943, and the famous ruined tower stands as a reminder of wartime damage. Together with its new octagonal chapel and (separate) hexagonal bell tower, the Church has become a symbol of the city.
You then transfer to join a modern pleasure cruiser for a leisurely cruise along the tranquil River Spree. It will take you through the government quarter with the Chancellery and the Reichstag (German Parliament), with its distinctive glass cupola built by Sir Norman Foster, and enjoy a memorable perspective of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Museum Island, including the Pergamon Museum and the Berlin Cathedral. During your hour-long cruise, you will be served with a basic three course lunch including a glass of beer or wine and coffee or tea.
After re-joining the coach, you continue to the remnants of the Berlin Wall. A slight chill still runs through you as you drive to ‘Check-point Charlie’, the well-known former border point in the American sector of the city, where there will be a photo stop. Your final photo stop will be at Gendarmenmarkt, said to be one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. During the return journey to Warnemünde, a light snack will be served on the coach before you arrive back at the ship.
By coach/river boat/on foot. Min 40/Max 240.
Please note: The journey to/from Berlin is un-guided. An English-speaking escort will accompany you on the journey. The transfer is approximately 3 hours each way. A convenience stop is made during the transfers and local currency (Euro) is required if you wish to use the restroom facilities. Snack boxes will be provided on both journeys. Lunch is served during the River Cruise to maximise the number of attractions that can be viewed in one day. Views from the lower deck where lunch is served can be restricted. This tour involves little walking although there are approximately 20-25 steps to embark and disembark the pleasure cruiser. It is a long full day, and passengers should take this into consideration before booking. The order of sightseeing may be altered depending on traffic conditions. As with any major city, road closures and congestion can occur without notice which may influence on the itinerary. Some photo stops are short whilst others are longer - this is usually dictated by the legal breaks required by your coach drivers.

Countryside and coastal scenes of northern Germany entertain you on this delightful tour that includes a ride aboard the nostalgic ‘Molli’ narrow-gauge railway. The tour starts with a drive in a south-westerly direction to visit the restored red brick medieval church of Bad Doberan Minster. Originally built as a monastery, the Church today is an important historical site of the Mecklenburg region, and your guided visit of the beautiful interior will feature the impressive winged altar, tabernacle and sanctuary lamp.
The historic ‘Molli’ steam train has been in operation since 1886, the carriages being pulled by an old-fashioned locomotive along a narrow-gauge railway. You board the train at the historic station in Bad Doberan, a small country town that was once a ducal summer residence and a centre of religious and military power, and pass through Heiligendamm, Germany’s oldest bathing resort visited by the Kaiser, the Russian Tsar, and European royalty. Your approximate 30-minute journey along the Baltic coast will take you through the scenic landscape of Doberan Linden Alley, a two-mile-long strip lined with lovely century-old linden trees, and along the way you will pass picturesque villages, an unspoiled coastline and attractive summer villas.
On arrival at Kühlungsborn station, your coach will transfer you to a leading hotel at this attractive seaside resort, where a cup of coffee or tea and a piece of homemade cake will be served. Afterwards there will be free time to take a stroll along the promenade and view the ‘strandkorb’, a typical German roofed wicker beach chair, before you enjoy a panoramic drive back to the ship.
By coach/train/on foot. Min 40/Max 160.
Please note: This tour involves approximately 45-minutes of walking/standing during the visit to the Church including a few steps. There are 3 large steps to embark the ‘Molli’. It is not considered suitable for passengers with wheelchairs owing to limited access on the train. Please cover your knees and shoulders when entering the Minster. Flash photography is not permitted inside. As the ‘Molli’ is pulled by a steam locomotive it is likely you will experience a strong smell of coal burning. This tour may operate in reverse. Tallinn is the capital of the recently independent republic of Estonia and can boast an extremely well-preserved medieval quarter. This tour combines the main sights of Tallinn’s Upper Old Town with a visit to the open-air museum at Rocca-al-Mare.
The Old Town of Tallinn consists of two parts, Upper and Lower, and from the port you drive past the ancient city walls and towers directly to the Upper Town, where you will start your approximate one-hour walking tour along the cobble-stoned streets. You will see Tall Hermann, a watchtower 150ft (45m) high built in 1371, the imposing Toompea Castle first built in 1219 and now the residence of the Estonian Parliament, and visit the Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. From here you continue on foot along medieval streets to visit the 13th century Cathedral, the oldest Church in the city. Inside the Church more than one hundred coats of arms are on display and the carved wooden Baroque pulpit is also of interest.
You then proceed on foot to a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Lower Old Town rooftops, before retracing your steps and re-joining your coach at Tall Hermann and travelling along the coast to the seaside resort of Rocca-al-Mare. Here, in a beautiful setting you will see authentic examples of 18th and 19th century rural buildings including a windmill, a small church and farm buildings displayed together with other trappings of farm life from various regions of Estonia. Refreshments of tea or coffee and a traditional pastry will be served at the Inn, and afterwards there will be a short time to shop at the museum’s gift shop before re-joining your coach for the transfer back to the ship.
By coach/mainly on foot. Min 40/Max varies.

This shot gave signal to the rebellious workers, soldiers and sailors of the city to storm the Winter Palace, launching the Bolshevik Revolution which led to over 70 years of Communist leadership.
You then cross a bridge over the Neva, and continue to one of the main landmarks of St. Petersburg, the Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood (exterior view only). Also known as The Church of Resurrection, it was built on the site where the Russian Tsar Alexander II was assassinated. It took a quarter of a century for the magnificent façades to rise from the earth, become covered in intricate mosaics and crowned with elaborate domes.
The massive St. Isaac’s Cathedral, reminiscent of St Peters’ in Rome, is where you head next for a photo stop from the outside only. This magnificent building took 40 years to complete, and the great dome, covered with more than 200 pounds of pure gold, is one of the largest in the world.
By coach/on foot. Min 40/Max varies.
Please note: This tour involves very little walking. Depending on the ship’s berth, there is a walk of between 100m (328ft) – 300m (984ft) to reach the tour buses. All walking at photo stops is at guests’ discretion. During the tour a short stop will be made at a souvenir shop for you to browse and perhaps purchase mementoes of your visit. This is a panoramic tour without entrances and limited time for use of facilities at the souvenir shop. The Church on Spilled Blood is currently undergoing external renovation work and so areas may be covered in scaffolding. Photo stops on this tour are subject to traffic conditions on the day and the route may differ from that described. Please refer to the ‘Important information’ for St. Petersburg.

Depart from the quayside for a drive through the old and modern sectors of the city to view the major places of historical importance. St. Petersburg is built on a series of islands with the Neva River flowing through the central area. A photo stop is included viewing the exterior of St. Isaac’s Cathedral. This magnificent building took 40 years to complete, and the great dome, covered with more than 200 pounds of pure gold, is one of the largest in the world.
You then cross the bridge over the Neva, and continue for a photo stop on the Spit of Basil’s Island where the distinctive Rostral Columns served as light houses on the Neva; a network of large and small decorated stone and iron bridges connects the islands and is a visual delight, and you will have a view of the Hermitage buildings as well as Peter and Paul Fortress.
Afterwards you head to the Peter & Paul Fortress, situated on the banks of the Neva River and established by Peter the Great in 1703 as a defence against possible attack by Sweden. As the newly-founded city of St. Petersburg became secure, the Fortress served as a prison for those who opposed the Tsarist regime. Tsarevich Alexei (Peter the Great’s son), Dostoyevsky and Mikhail Bakunin were among those who were imprisoned here. The dominant building within this great bastion is the Peter and Paul Cathedral (inside visit included), with its 400-ft-high (122m) fragile spire, covered with gold leaf, supporting an angel bearing a cross. Over the course of two centuries the Cathedral was the burial ground for many members of the royal Romanov family, including Peter the Great, Alexander II and the last Russian Tsar Nicolay II (cousin of George V) and his family.
A further photo stop will be made at the ‘Cruiser Aurora’, famed for firing a blank shot at the Winter Palace 100 years ago on the night of October 25th 1917. This shot gave signal to the rebellious workers, soldiers and sailors of the city to storm the Winter Palace, launching the Bolshevik Revolution which led to over 70 years of Communist leadership.
Your final photo stop will be at the Church on the Spilled Blood. Also known as The Church of Resurrection, it was built on the site where the Russian Tsar Alexander II was assassinated. It took a quarter of a century for the magnificent façades to rise from the earth, become covered in intricate mosaics and crowned with elaborate domes.

(Yusupov Palace, Waterways, HS)
Your tour starts with a drive through the city to the pier on the Neva River, where you will board your canal boat for a delightful approximate one-hour cruise along the waterways, providing a unique perspective of the history and splendid architecture of this beautiful city.
Since the middle of the 18th century, the Moika embankments have been regarded as the most prestigious location for the mansions of the nobility. Many ornate bridges traverse the city’s waterways and during your trip you will pass under some of the most well known, with each turn of the river opening up a new panorama. You will also travel along the Fontanka River as far as the Anichkov Bridge, considered one of the most beautiful in the city. Venturing out into the mighty Neva River you will have wonderful views of the Winter Palace and Peter & Paul Fortress.
After the boat cruise, rejoin the coach for a short transfer to the Yusupov Palace. Built in the 1760s, the Palace represents a rare combination of an architectural monument and a temple of art. Of all the magnificent palaces, Prince Yusupov’s is justly regarded to be the most superb and luxurious. Here music, theatre and poetry are in perfect harmony. The Dancing Hall and the Home Theatre and White Column (Concert) Hall are particularly noted for their beauty. Recently renovated to their former splendour, the rooms are filled with rich decorative items, paintings, sparkling crystal chandeliers and elaborate furnishings.
The Yusupov Palace is perhaps best known as the place where, in December 1916, Prince Felix Yusupov and his accomplices murdered Rasputin who was considered to be a threat to the monarchy. Your guide will lead you to the basement where you will see an exhibition of waxworks in the very cellar room where Rasputin was poisoned and shot several times, and learn how even this did not prove fatal to the Czarina’s idol. At the end of the visit, rejoin your coach for the transfer back to the ship.
By coach/canal boat/on foot. Min 40/Max varies.
Please note: There is approximately 1¼ hours of guided walking/standing during the visit to the Yusupov Palace including approximately 60 stairs, some of which are narrow to access the basement. There is a short walk between the coach and the canal boat including uneven/broken paving so extra care must be taken. There are several steep steps to embark and disembark the canal boat. It may be necessary to cross other tour boats. This tour is not considered suitable for passengers who use wheelchairs or scooters. There may not be sufficient outside seating for all guests, but there is sufficient seating inside. Guests should take great care if standing up to take photos as the boat passes under several low bridges. Guests are recommended to take a sweater or jacket with them as it can be cooler out on the water even in favourable weather. Headsets cannot be used on board the canal boat. Your guide will provide some commentary but this can be difficult to hear on the outer deck. In the event of particularly inclement weather resulting in high water levels, the route of the canal ride may be changed to avoid low bridges or the canal boat ride may be cancelled and replaced with a walk in the city. The order of the tour may differ from that described. Please refer to the ‘Important information’ for St. Petersburg.

A 17-mile (27km) drive through the countryside south of St. Petersburg takes you to the town of Pushkin, the site of Catherine Palace. Named in honour of Peter the Great’s wife, Catherine I, the Palace was constructed in the mid-18th century and is breathtaking in its size and elegance. The ornate blue façade is nearly 1,000 ft-long (305m), with the golden onion domes of its chapel rising at the north end. The long classical gallery of heroic Greek and Roman busts that runs alongside the Palace was the work of the Scottish architect, Charles Cameron.
Your guide will walk you through a series of magnificent rooms including the famous Picture Gallery, the Amber Room and of course the Great Hall, the most spacious room in the Palace. The Palace is noted for its luxurious, fairytale interior complete with fine furnishings and china. The grounds comprise 1,482 acres of landscaped gardens and parklands, embellished by charming pavilions, which add to the splendour.
Before leaving the Palace you will see the Lyceum, built by Catherine for the education of her grandchildren, and it was here where the noted poet Alexander Pushkin studied in the early 19th century.
By coach/on foot. Min 40/Max varies.
Please note: This tour involves approximately 2¼ hours of walking/standing including gravel pathways and approximately 46 stairs. Some walking will be fast paced. This tour is not suitable for passengers who use wheelchairs, scooters or walking aids. The Palace can be very crowded and so queues to enter are to be expected. Please dress appropriately. Founded by Catherine the Great, this 18th century baroque Winter Palace and its four adjacent buildings gracing the banks of the River Neva, have evolved into the Hermitage Museum, housing the most extensive collection of art in the world with more than 3 million exhibits. Among the treasures are thousands of paintings, rare sculptures and the finest display anywhere of arts and crafts, carpets, embroidery, lace, porcelain, furniture and silverware.
The Hermitage is so vast it would take a lifetime to experience all of its treasures. Occupying more than 1,000 rooms and halls, the Hermitage collection includes works by the world’s greatest historical artists. Just as dazzling are the patterned parquet floors, ornate staircases, moulded and painted ceilings, gilded furniture and decorative malachite of the Palace itself. Walk through a few of the display rooms with your guide, who will relate fascinating facts about the Museum’s history, art and architecture. Viewing the paintings and artwork will be the main focus of the visit.

This tour combines a short city panoramic tour with an opportunity to visit the relatively new, but already world-renowned private museum housing a collection of masterpieces of Carl Fabergé and his contemporaries. As your guide introduces you to some of the city highlights, a short photo stop will be made outside the House of Fabergé, once the St. Petersburg workshop where the Master created many of his most famous pieces. The building now hosts a jewellery store.
The Fabergé Museum was opened to preserve, study, and promote Russia's cultural heritage. The Museum is located in one of the most beautiful palaces in St. Petersburg, the Shuvalov Palace, a fitting venue for the world's largest collection of works by the artist. The Museum’s headline attraction is undoubtedly nine of the famous, priceless, Imperial Fabergé Easter Eggs. Other collections include decorative and applied works made by the Russian masters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Only 50 Imperial Eggs were ever made by Carl Fabergé, each given as a lavish Easter gift by the last two Tsars to their wives and mothers. All unique, the nine here are displayed with due reverence, the precious stones that encrust them lit so that they sparkle brilliantly. Interestingly, the collection includes both the first and last Imperial Eggs. The Hen Egg was first and is the simplest - a white, enamelled shell with polished gold interior. Inside sits a golden yolk, which in turn contains a golden hen. The Order of St. George Egg, presented by Nicholas II in 1916, was the final one to reach its royal recipient. Others of note include the Renaissance Egg, Lilies of the Valley Egg and probably the most famous and valuable, the Coronation Egg: a sunburst of yellow enamel wrapped within a jewelled web.
After the 1918 revolution, the Eggs were scattered widely, ending up in collections worldwide. Three are owned by Queen Elizabeth II; ten are in Moscow; seven are lost; and the nine on display here formed part of the Forbes Collection in America until they were bought by Viktor Vekselberg, one of Russia’s richest men, for $100m in 2004. He also bought and restored glorious Shuvalov Palace to house his collection, which includes over 4,000 pieces. Beyond the Imperial Eggs, there are snuff boxes, figurines and fabulous objects d'art, plus a gallery of classical Russian paintings and a roomful of religious icons.
En route back to the ship, a stop will be made at a shop whose stock includes replica Fabergé Easter Eggs, Fabergé style pendants and a whole host of other Russian souvenirs.
By mini-bus or coach/on foot. Min 15/Max varies.
Please note: This tour involves approximately 1¾ hours of walking/standing and includes approximately 40 stairs to the first floor where the exhibition is displayed. The Museum has a lift which it may be possible to use by prior agreement. This tour is not suitable for passengers who use scooters. Traffic conditions and availability of parking may result in an extended walk to/from the entrance of the Museum. Owing to restrictions on numbers entering the exhibition, this tour is conducted in smaller groups and visits are restricted to approximately 40-minutes. Children under 12 years are not permitted unless prior agreement has been made. The Museum’s own shop is not included on this tour as they currently do not accept credit/debit cards. St. Petersburg has long been regarded as one of the world’s most famous ballet centres, and the second half of the 19th century was a golden age for ballet, thanks to the musical genius of the Russian composer Tchaikovsky, who wrote his three masterpieces: Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty (first performed in the city in 1890), and The Nutcracker.
During this evening tour you will have the opportunity to enjoy a classical ballet performance at a reputable venue in the heart of the city of St. Petersburg. The final details of the performance and venue will be available once on board. Seats will be reserved and tickets are subject to availability and must be purchased in advance by our local agent; therefore we regret that once tickets have been reserved, refunds cannot be considered.
A glass of Russian ‘champagne’ or mineral water will be served during the interval.
By coach/on foot. Min 40/Max varies.
Please note: The venue will most likely be the Aurora Ballet Hall or Carnival Concert Hall. The duration of the tour is dependent on the venue and performance on the day. Photography and filming is not permitted during the performance. Traffic and parking restrictions may result in a 5-10 minute walk to/from the coach/venue. (Peterhof Palace & Gardens, St. Isaacs Cathedral, City Panorama, Souvenir Shop, Lunch, HS)
This full-day tour introduces you to the main highlights of the city of St. Petersburg, as well as a visit to the magnificent Peterhof Palace & Gardens and St. Isaacs Cathedral.
Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, the city has a fascinating history and is built on a series of islands connected by a network of iron and stone bridges. A photo stop will be made so you may see the distinctive Rostral Columns which served as light houses on the River Neva. There is also an excellent view of the Hermitage buildings as well as the Peter and Paul Fortress.
The tour continues to one of the main landmarks of St. Petersburg, the Church on the Spilled Blood (exterior view only). Also known as The Church of Resurrection, it was built on the site where the Russian Tsar Alexander II was assassinated. It took a quarter of a century for the magnificent façades to rise from the earth, become covered in intricate mosaics and crowned with elaborate domes.
Next you will visit St. Isaac’s Cathedral, reminiscent of St. Peter’s in Rome. This magnificent building took 40 years to complete, and the great dome, covered with more than 200 pounds of pure gold, is one of the largest in the world. It was one of the main cathedrals of the Russian Orthodox Church at the time of the Russian Empire. The structure is supported by 112 monolithic columns and the interior is elaborately decorated with more than 30 different kinds of marble, spectacular mosaics, painted ceiling murals and sculptures.
Lunch together with a glass of Russian ‘champagne’, mineral water and coffee or tea will be served at a restaurant before your tour continues to Peterhof, situated approximately 22 miles (35km) to the west of St. Petersburg on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland.
Built by Peter the Great at the beginning of the 18th century to rival Versailles, this town of palaces, fountains and parks is known as the grandest of all the summer residences of the Russian Tsars. Your visit will include a guided tour of the Palace, as well as the magnificent park and gardens. Inside the Palace the state apartments are sumptuously appointed, while Peter himself designed the layout of the 300-acre park with its spectacular fountains. The Grand Cascade, often considered the highlight of the grounds, consists of three waterfalls, an avenue of 64 fountains and 37 gilded statues. During World War II, the estate was occupied and all the buildings and fountains were virtually destroyed, so it has taken many years to restore Peterhof right down to the last detail.
By coach/on foot. Min 40/Max varies.
Please note: This tour involves approximately 30-minutes of walking/standing at St. Isaacs and 2 hours of walking/standing at Peterhof including many stairs and uneven ground. Some walking will be fast paced. This tour is not suitable for passengers who use wheelchairs, scooters or walking aids. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are essential. During the tour a short stop will be made at a souvenir shop for you to browse and perhaps purchase mementoes of your visit. The Church on Spilled Blood is currently undergoing external renovation work and so areas may be covered in scaffolding. The route of the city tour and photo stops made may differ to that described due to traffic conditions on the day. The order of the tour may also differ to that described.Alcohol will not be served to those under 18. Proof of age may be required. Please refer to the ‘Important information’ for St. Petersburg.

From the port, you drive to the spectacular multicoloured onion-domed Church on the Spilled Blood for a visit. This dazzling and exquisitely decorated Church is located on the site where the Russian Tsar, Alexander II, was assassinated in 1881 by Ignaty Grinevitsky, a member of the revolutionary People’s Will organisation. Within a day of his father’s death, Alexander III declared his intention of erecting a great church to commemorate his father and decreed that the altar should be on the very spot where his blood had stained the cobblestones. Deliberately designed to resemble St. Basil’s in Moscow, it is one of St. Petersburg’s most striking landmarks, quite unlike the rest of the city’s architecture. You will see an extensive collection of contemporary Russian mosaics as well as many fine examples of precious stones, glazed ceramic tiles and jewellers’ enamel, used to cover the surface of the five domes.
Following the visit, you rejoin the coach and continue to the pier where you board a canal boat for an approximate one-hour cruise along the waterways, providing a unique opportunity to appreciate the history and splendid architecture of this beautiful city. The waterways you travel along, the Moika, Fontanka and Neva, wind past the lavish mansions and Winter Palaces of the aristocracy, with each turn of the river opening up a new panorama. At the end of the cruise, your coach will be waiting to transfer you to the ship.
By coach/canal boat/on foot. Min 40/Max varies.

(Fabergé Museum, Souvenir Shop, HS)
The souvenir shop visited does, along with euros. The advertised departure and/or return times of the tour may have to change once entry tickets are purchased in the lead up to the call. Leaving the quayside, you drive past the red-brick Uspenski Cathedral with its golden domes, and the dignified Presidential Palace, used mainly on state occasions. You follow the harbour where private boats are moored and see the powerful icebreakers, essential during the long, cold winter months when much of the Baltic Seais frozen.
The tour continues to the neo-classical Senate Square, the heart of the city built after Helsinki became the capital in 1812, where there will be a photo stop. The most imposing monument here is the domed Lutheran Cathedral designed by Carl Ludwig Engel.
Back on the coach you then pass by the colourful open-air Market Square where amid the flower sellers, atop a fountain, is a bronze statue of the sea-nymph, Havis Amanda, the symbol of the city. At Kaivopuisto, one of the city’s most gracious green spaces is the exclusive embassy district, and you will drive around the large park from where there are splendid sea views of the island Fortress Suomenlinna.
Continue your journey along Mannerheim Street, the main artery in Helsinki, where you will see some fine specimens of the famed Finnish architecture: the Parliament Building, the National Museum, Finlandia Hall, the Opera House and the new Contemporary Art Museum, Kiasma, designed by the American architect Steven Holl.
You then pass the Olympic Stadium, venue for the 1952 Olympic Games. In front of the Stadium is a statue of the renowned distance runner Paavo Nurmi, ‘The Flying Finn’. At Sibelius Park, you will stop to view the stainless steel monument dedicated to the great composer, Jean Sibelius, which took six years to complete.
Finally, you will visit the Temppeliaukio Rock Church, an impressive structure carved out of solid rock and topped with a copper dome. Its magnificent acoustic qualities make it an ideal venue for concerts.
By coach/on foot. Min 45/Max 90.
Please note: The Temppeliaukio Rock Church is a popular venue for weddings and other functions during the summer, and it is not always possible to visit inside the Church. Please be advised that it will be necessary to walk to/from the coach park to the Rock Church as parking is not possible directly outside. The walk is approximately 400m (1,400ft) each way. All other walking is at guests’ discretion. Owing to ongoing road works, it is possible that the coaches may not be able to drive along all the above mentioned streets. This tour will encompass the main highlights of the city followed by a visit to the historic town of Porvoo. You leave the harbour and drive to Senate Square, the city’s focal point built in the beginning of the 1800’s, where there will be a photo stop. From here you proceed along the main thoroughfares, Esplanadi andMannerheim Street, passing theParliamentBuilding, theNationalMuseum, Finlandia Hall and the Opera House, before travelling for approximately one hour in an easterly direction along the coastal road through the beautiful wooded Finnish countryside to Porvoo.
The second oldest town inFinland, Porvoo was established in 1346 by the Swedish King Magnus Eriksson, at the mouth of the River Porvoo. It is not hard to see why Porvoo has always been a favourite of Finnish poets and painters. Streets lined with comfortably sagging wooden houses painted red, yellow and pale ‘Russian’ blue meander through the old part of town by the river. The most photographed buildings are undoubtedly the bright red 18th-century storehouses, built after the great fire of 1760, which serve as a reminder of the time when Porvoo was an important medieval trading centre. Today the town has a population of around 44,000, with two-thirds of them speaking Finnish as their native language and one-third speaking Swedish.
You will have a photo stop at the Old Bridge of Porvoo affording lovely views of this idyllic town and, as you walk with your guide along the narrow cobblestoned streets, you will appreciate the charming contrast of past and present. There will be approximately one hour of free time to browse for souvenirs among the wide range of arts and crafts shops and perhaps visit the famous chocolate shop, before you rejoin the coach for the return journey to the ship.
By coach/on foot. Min 40/Max 90.
Please note: The visit to Porvoo is mainly on foot, and involves approximately 1km (0.6 miles) of walking including cobblestoned streets with steps, however the majority of walking is at guests’ discretion. Flat, comfortable footwear is recommended. Owing to ongoing road works in Helsinki, it is possible that the coaches may not be able to drive along all the above mentioned streets. Panoramic Stockholm & Vasa |

More infoHide |
Stockholm was founded as a fortress where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. In the mid-13th century, the fortress progressed to a town, spreading to nearby islands and the mainland to become a city and the capital of Sweden. Today Stockholm sprawls gracefully over fourteen islands connected by no fewer than fifty bridges and it is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s most beautiful cities.
The tour begins with a short drive up to Fjällgatan for a scenic view of Stockholm before starting your panoramic tour of the city. You pass by Gamla Stan, the enchanting medieval Old Town and the Royal Palace overlooking Stockholm’s inner harbour. Continuing along Strandvägen, you travel to the neighbouring island of Djurgården to visit the Vasa Museum. The present Museum is built around the 17th century warship which sank in Stockholm’s inner harbour on her maiden voyage in 1628; its discovery in 1956 and subsequent salvage in 1961 is one of the most notable events in marine archaeology. In addition to the well-preserved, elaborately decorated hull, thousands of items from the ship, including hundreds of sculptures, have been recovered. Painstakingly restored to much of its original magnificence, the Vasa represents an authentic piece of living history. You will be given some time here to explore independently.
Leaving the Vasa, you continue with a drive through the residential district know as Diplomat Town, where the foreign embassies are situated, to Östermalm and on to Hamngatan and Sergel’s Torg, the focal point of modern Stockholm. Proceeding south past the Parliament Building, the House of Nobility and via the narrow canal at Slusen, you cross to Södermalm, the large island on Stockholm’s south side, before returning to the ship.
By coach/on foot. Min 40.
Please note: The order of sights may vary. To fully enjoy this tour there is approximately 1½ hours of walking, much of which is at guests’ discretion during the visit to the Vasa Museum. The visit to the Museum is self-guided - guests may wish to hire audio guides or download the Vasa Museum App on their tablet or smartphone (this can be done prior to the cruise departure). Please bear in mind that the Museum may be cooler than the outside temperature and so we recommend you take a jacket with you. There are cobblestones outside the Museum and approximately 30 steps (there is a ramp/elevator available).

Nature and city planning have combined to make Stockholm one of the most attractive of the world’s capitals. Water plays an important part in city life and no fewer than fifty bridges of every shape and size link the fourteen islands upon which Stockholm is built. The islands are separated by broad waterways, which impart a sense of spaciousness and light to this modern and highly functional city. With water accounting for one third of Stockholm’s total surface area and one third comprised of parks and woodlands, the city’s environmental habitat makes it unique among capital cities.
The centre of Stockholm is strategically placed where freshwater Lake Mälaren meets with Saltsjön. Lake Mälaren serves as a reservoir for Stockholm city’s drinking water. The water is not for drinking alone; bathing and fishing in the city centre are popular diversions and sailing boats make full use of the larger channels.
As your motor launch cruises along the many waterways and canals, you will have ample time to contemplate the serene beauty of Stockholm’s waterside setting. With parks, tree-lined squares, wide boulevards, many fine architectural façades, and playgrounds in every view, it is difficult to imagine as you glide peacefully along gazing out over the water that you are in a bustling city. Stockholm truly deserves to be called ‘Beauty on Water’.
By motor launch/on foot. Min 100/Max 110.
Please note: Depending on where the launch is berthed it is possible that there may be an approximate 5-10-minute walk from the ship. We recommend you take a jacket or sweater with you as it can be cooler out on the water even in favourable weather. During the cruise, passengers should take great care if standing up to take photos as the boat passes under several low bridges. There is limited seating outside on the launch, but plenty of seating inside.

After a short drive from the quayside, you start with a visit on foot to Stockholm’s wonderfully-preserved old historic quarter, the Old Town (Gamla Stan). As you wander with your guide along the twisting alleyways and narrow cobble-stoned streets, you will experience the medieval intimacy of what is today a living historical monument. Its houses, palaces and soaring spires are steeped in history and you will get the impression of being transported back several centuries.
Nearby stands Storkyrkan (Great Church), the city’s oldest church dating back to the 13th century and the coronation site of most of Sweden’s kings, which you will visit. The severe Baroque exterior gives no hint of the beauty of its late-Gothic interior. You will also see Stortorget (Great Square), the hub of the Old Town, home of the Stock Exchange and the Swedish Academy which meets each year to decide the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature.
Continue your walk past the Parliament Building and cross over to Riddarholmen Island (The Island of Knights). Here you will stop to photograph the impressive exterior of Riddarholmen Church, parts of which date back to the late 13th century, and the central square with its three palaces of Wrangel, Hessenstein & Schering Rosenhane.
Your walking tour concludes at the waterfront where you step aboard the M/S Queen Mälaren. This almost century old ship historically served in the British Navy and has been used as a Norwegian school ship. Whilst onboard relax with a cup of tea or coffee and a cinnamon and sugar bun. You return by coach back to the quayside.
By coach/on foot. Min 35/Max 80.
Please note: This tour involves approximately 2½ hours of walking/standing including cobble-stoned streets in the Old Town and some steps. Flat, comfortable footwear is recommended. Please dress appropriately for weather conditions on the day. In the event that Storkyrkan is closed a visit will be made to Riddarholmen Church instead. Departing from the pier, your tour heads to the city centre for a visit to the Swedish History Museum, one of the largest museums in the country. It boasts a collection of more than ten million objects including archaeological artefacts and ecclesiastical art from oldest pre-history to the Viking and Middle Ages, all excavated or found on Swedish soil.
Enjoy a visit to the Museum’s Gold Room containing a total of 52kg of gold and over 200kg of silver objects including three unique gold collars from the Migration Period, Viking Age silver pendants and shrines from the Middle Ages decorated with precious stones. Modern day gold and silversmiths marvel at the skills of their ancient predecessors. Whilst at the Museum you will also visit the Viking Room. Although most famous for their warlike rampages, the majority of Vikings were peaceful traders and the exhibition includes thousands of objects relating to their everyday activities, religious beliefs and family life along with their weapons. Time permitting, you should have some free time to explore the Museum further independently, shop for a souvenir or perhaps purchase a refreshment in the cafe before rejoining your coach.
A short panoramic drive through the centre of the city will bring you to the Old Town (Gamla Stan), where the historic elegance of the imposing Royal Palace contrasts starkly with the narrow, twisting alleyways and cobblestoned streets radiating from it. Discover the scenic beauty and two of the most important historical landmarks in the northern region of Denmark. After an approximate 40-minute drive along the east coast north of Aalborg, you will find the picturesque little coastal town of Sæby with its well-preserved, yellow-washed houses. Sæby has an exciting history and is one of the oldest towns in Northern Jutland. Since 1524, Sæby has been a market town, but the first inhabitants settled here during the Viking Age. Your guide will lead you on an approximate one hour walking tour through the old town where you will see the former monastery church, St. Mary’s, the last remnants of a large four-winged Carmelite Monastery established in 1470. The Carmelite Monks specially venerated the Virgin Mary - the central figure in the Church and also on the town’s coat of arms. You will visit the Church, famed for its beautiful 16th century frescoes depicting Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Virgin Mary. In the Choir you can still see twenty of the original thirty two monk’s stalls. The baptismal font from 1645 is Baroque and carved in wood and the 16th century altarpiece is from the Netherlands. In the last decade of the 19th century artists and writers gathered in Sæby, amongst them the Norwegian playwright, Henrik Ibsen, who found inspiration in the idyllic town.
Following your walk, a short scenic countryside drive brings you to Voergaard Castle - one of the best preserved renaissance castles in Denmark. The oldest parts of the Castle date back to 1481 and during your guided tour you will hear about how it has housed many colourful historic characters, including Stygge Krumpen, last Catholic Bishop of Denmark, who had to flee for his life when a peasant army stormed the Castle during the civil war in 1534. Another was the enterprising and headstrong Ingeborg Skeel, owner of the Castle from 1586-1608. Hear how she received an undeservedly bad reputation from her contemporaries, probably for no other reason than that she was a strong woman. During your visit, see evidence of the extensive and unique collection of European art and furniture, including works by Goya, Rubens, Raphael and El Greco, together with treasures from the personal belongings of Napoleon I, Louis XIV and Marie-Antoinette. Following your visit, it is an approximate 30-minute drive back to Aalborg.
By coach/on foot. Min 35/Max 120.
Please note: This tour involves approximately 2½ hours of walking/standing including cobblestones and steps. Flat, comfortable footwear is recommended. Photography is not permitted inside the Castle.
