Job Description

Department: Engine

Main function: Safe and efficient Performance of Main and Auxiliary Engines. Maintenance of Machinery and Critical Equipment

Direct Subordinates: All Engine Officers

Next in Command: 2nd Engineer


  • Knowledge of the applicable codes, guidelines and standards
  • Leadership capacity
  • Large-scale knowledge of the applicable codes, guidelines and standards
  • Well acquainted with the Safety, Health and Environmental Protection Management System and MLC requirements
  • Minimum of seagoing experience as 1st or Staff Engineer for at least three years on board the vessels type or other adequate experience (unless decided different by the company)
  • All certificates and licenses as required by the STCW Code for this position
  • Must have acceptable skills in public relations and a good command of the English language
  • Minimum 10 years ship’s experience.
  • Must have acceptable Typing & Computer skills
  • It is recommended to have USPH, Coast Guard & UK MCA Port State Control experience
  • It is recommended to have minimum knowledge in HACCP
  • Must be knowledgeable in ISM matters

  • Staff Captain - All Deck, Safety, Communication technical matter
  • Hotel Director - All Hotel technical matters
  • Doctor - All medical technical Matters

At all times a professional and diplomatic relationship is to be maintained with all other officers whilst protecting the interests of the operations contract

Specific Duties/Responsibilities and Activities

  • Replaces Chief Engineer
  • Executing maintenance works and repairs in the engine department
  • Providing support to maintenance activities on deck, as instructed by the Chief Engineer
  • Takes care of stock control
  • Reporting executed maintenance to the Chief Engineer for entry into the planned maintenance system
  • Efficient and safe operation of all engines and equipment in the engine room and where relevant on deck
  • Verifies by carrying out a risk assessment that crew members a fit (fatigue, stress…) to work during their contract period.
  • Ensures seaworthiness of the vessel in the engine department
  • Maintains stand-by equipment and systems in a complete state of readiness to meet any emergency requirement
  • Test stand-by equipment on a regular basis and in accordance with company procedures
  • Ensures that sufficient spare parts for his department are available
  • Provides support of technical maintenance activities on deck in co-operation with the deck officers
  • Monitors the engine control systems
  • Maintains the critical equipment
  • Notifies the Chief Engineer immediately of any defects which may affect the ship’s safety or put a risk on the marine environment
  • Properly keeps the necessary documentation
  • Provides information and consultancy in case of inspections
  • Ensures that relevant Flag Administration requirements are available and understood by Engineers
  • Ensures that all identified risks to the vessel, personnel and the environment and establish appropriate safeguards ( Risk Assessment)
  • Monitors technical performance of the ship
  • Ensuring all documentation/records relevant to the SMS is up to date and readily available, as per Company’s procedures.
  • Verifies roles of Senior Officers with respect to the SMS.
  • Authority:

  • Assigns special duties to the engine officers and crew
  • Orders spare parts and consumables in co-operation with the Chief Engineer
  • Proposes any changes with respect to the SMS

Substitute: 2nd Engineer

Reporting to: Chief Engineer

Passenger Service

Ensures that AVO jobs are carried out by technical staff


Assists in the organizing the bunkers plans.

Coordinates technical works on a daily basis.

Participates in Maintenance Meetings.

He participates in Weekly Public Health Inspections.

He reports all defects and deficiencies aboard his ship to the Chief Engineer.

  • The highest priority is to treat every officer and crew member in the same way that he would want to be treated himself.
  • To evaluate Engine crew/Officers as per SMS.
  • He has to lead subordinates successfully into productive working methods by setting an example and utilising all available management tools
  • Ensures that the set standards are kept and staff members work according to their respective job descriptions. Corrective action must to be taken to ensure standards are upheld.
  • Completes Handover protocol when signing on/off the vessel.
