Job Description

Rank: Officer (1st Officer or 2nd Officer)

Department: Deck

Main function: Maintain SMS related documents up to date. Maintain all ships certificates up to date. He coordinates all Document change requests.

Direct Subordinates: Deck Officers/Cadets (They assist him in carrying out his duties)


  • All certificates and licenses as required by the STCW Code for this position
  • Large-scale knowledge of the applicable codes, guidelines and standards
  • Well acquainted with the Safety and Environmental Protection Management System
  • Large-scale knowledge of English
  • Acquainted with the Safety, Health and Environmental Protection Management System and MLC requirements
  • Minimum of seagoing experience as Officer on Watch for at least two years on board the vessels type or other adequate experience (unless decided different by the company)
  • All certificates and licenses as required by the STCW Code for this position & Preferable to have Master’s license ( Class A)
  • Minimum 8 years ship’s experience. (unless decided different by the company)
  • Must have acceptable Typing & Computer skills
  • It is recommended to have USPH, Coast Guard and UK MCA Port State Control experience
  • It is recommended to have IPM knowledge
  • Must be knowledgeable in the ISM matters

Areas of Responsibility

  • Maintains Navigational watch
  • Maintains all ship’s certificates
  • Safety Management System ( SMS Procedures, Navigation Procedures and Emergency Procedures)
  • Risk Assessment (Risk assessment in Ship’s Operations, Identification of new hazards…)

Specific Duties/Responsibilities and Activities

  • Has to take care of safe navigation and pollution prevention during his watch
  • Is responsible to receive, control and use of navigational information
  • Responsible for log books, forms and check lists
  • Keeps National ( Flag Bulletins) requirements up to date
  • Responsible for administration and control of ship’s certificates
  • Responsible for administration and control of crew certificates for deck, radio, security and engine department
  • Checks that STCW checklist are kept by the Crew Coordinator.
  • Controls the controlled documents posted throughout the vessel
  • Checks IMO publications and takes care of distribution to the departments
  • Is responsible for the safe embarkation and disembarkation of the pilot and the supervision of the safety of this operation during his watch
  • Is responsible for safe mooring operations on his designated mooring station under supervision of the Master and Staff Captain
  • Ensures that all SMS related documents are up to date.
  • Ensures that all identified risks to the vessel, personnel and the environment and establish appropriate safeguards ( Risk Assessment)

Authority: Proposes any changes with respect to the SMS

Substitute: 2nd Officer (Deck)

Reporting to: Master, Staff Captain


He participates in Master Meetings, Participates in Maintenance Meetings if instructed by the Staff Captain.
