Job Description

Rank: Officer (1st Officer or 2nd Officer)

Department: Deck

Main function: Responsible for all navigational equipment on the Bridge and Nautical Publications & is expected to report any defects directly to the Master. Prepares and maintain the passage planning

Direct Subordinates: Deck Officers/Cadets (They assist him in carrying out his duties)

Next in Command: 1st Officer


  • All certificates and licenses as required by the STCW Code for this position
  • Large-scale knowledge of the applicable codes, guidelines and standards
  • Well acquainted with the Safety and Environmental Protection Management System
  • Large-scale knowledge of English
  • Acquainted with the Safety, Health and Environmental Protection Management System and MLC requirements
  • Minimum of seagoing experience as Officer on Watch for at least two years on board the vessels type or other adequate experience (unless decided different by the company)
  • All certificates and licenses as required by the STCW Code for this position and preferable to have Master’s license ( Class A)
  • Minimum 8 years ship’s experience. (unless decided different by the company)
  • Must have acceptable Typing and Computer skills
  • It is recommended to have USPH, Coast Guard and UK MCA Port State Control experience
  • Must be knowledgeable in ISM matters

At all times a professional and diplomatic relationship is to be maintained with all other officers whilst protecting the interests of the operations contract

Specific Duties/Responsibilities and Activities

  • Has to take care of safe navigation and pollution prevention during his watch
  • He is responsible to the Master for the safe navigation during his watch, safety and pollution prevention
  • The First Officer is in charge of all navigational equipment on the Bridge and reports any defects directly to the Master
  • Standing the Navigation watch at sea and whilst in Port
  • The maintenance of all Bridge Publications (with the Admiralty List of Radio Signals), ensuring they are corrected up to the date of the latest corrections received on board and/ or the latest editions/ volumes published.
  • The maintenance of the Navigational chart Folios on board. Also for communicating with the shore based correction facility to arrange for the return of the relevant charts required when the trading area of the vessel changes
  • Ensure that the GMDSS Log Book is maintained, on a daily basis, as per the instructions laid out in the front of the GMDSS Log Book. The Communication Officer will carry out all requisite tests of the GMDSS installation (M1592) including the upkeep / testing of EPIRB’s, SARTS and Navtex.
  • Provide the Master with all communication details for the next port
  • Calculate and present to the Master tidal conditions in all ports of call
  • Obtain the latest weather conditions en route three times daily by using all available means and display this information on the Bridge for other Watch Officers.
  • Ensure that ECDIS updated passage plan created and activated.
  • Prepare the Cruise Schedule as per the Official Ship Schedule received and present to the Master at least 14 days prior to the commencement of that cruise.
  • Carry out respective daily, weekly, monthly checks as per AMOS.
  • Update the Port Information Database (photos, PAQ etc).
  • Duties and Responsibilities of Bridge Officer can be amended to suit operational requirements.
  • Takes care of the nautical planning of the voyages as instructed by the Master
  • Prepares and maintain voyage performance reports
  • Prepares Arrival, Departure and Noon reports
  • Is in charge of the full management of navigational charts, navigational publications, bridge instructions and navigation facilities
  • Checks and corrects nautical documents, as navigational charts and publications and reports need or incompleteness to the Master
  • Processes orders for navigational charts and publications
  • Is responsible for the safe embarkation and disembarkation of the pilot and the supervision of the safety of this operation
  • Is responsible for safe mooring operations on his designated mooring station under supervision of the Master and Staff Captain
  • He maintains the inventory of Navigation equipment and Nautical Publications
  • Assists in the familiarization of Bridge Equipment
  • Ensures that all identified risks to the vessel, personnel and the environment and establish appropriate safeguards ( Risk Assessment)

Authority: Proposes any changes with respect to the SMS

Substitute: 2nd Officer (ISM)

Reporting to: Master, Staff Captain

Passenger Service

He displays Nautical and Weather charts at the passengers area.

He provides navigational information to passengers.


Participates in Master Meetings, Participates in Maintenance Meetings if instructed by the Staff Captain

He reports all defects and deficiencies of Bridge equipment aboard to the Staff Captain and Master. Matters requiring immediate action and/or assistance from the Company are reported without delay by telephone, telex, e-mail, mobile or fax.
